MEP has always been an advocate of Heads-Down approach. When Auto-Save starts & ends, it would be nice to hear a slight tone that could let the user know that they may want to "hold" on what they are doing while the Auto-Save is saving. It would eliminate the gray screen and try to figure out where you were when the Auto-Save started.
