There needs to be an available for use line for PTO. Having only Paid hours and Balance hours shown on a paystub is not conducive to an efficient operation when handling multiple paid time off programs for larger employers. In Washington employees earn 1 hour of sick time for every 40 hours worked and in Oregon employees earn 1 hour of sick time for every 30 hours worked. This means that any full-time employee who works a full year will accrue 69.16 sick hours in Oregon and 52 sick hours in Washington.
Both states allow employers to front load sick time. Both states allow employers to cap the amount of sick time an employee can use to 40 hours a year. Both states allow employers to roll over 40 hours of unused sick time into the following year. Our company has implemented different policies for different classifications of employees. For us, that means some employees will accrue more hours than available to use in the current year because we want the employees to roll over unused sick time to the next year.
Currently we have employees who have used their 40 hours of sick time this year, but they think they have more they can use because the balance on the paystub shows the accrued hours not the hours available to use.
There would be less confusion across the board if there was an available for use line of the paystubs.
