In Payroll Cost Account setup, there is only one employee fringe benefit account allowed. I need at least two fringe benefit accounts, one for 401(k) match and one for employer HSA contribution. I am required by our holding company to report these two expenses separately. Because of this limitation, I have to do a journal entry every month to separate those two fringe expenses. This process isn't accurate if the employee charges time directly to a project. The fringe cost follows the employee and it is not practical to figure out how much time what charged to a project vs how much time was charged to indirect labor each month just for this particular journal entry. The calculation would need to be done employee by employee which adds to the impractical nature of the journal entry. The default GL account I use for fringes looks strange every month due to this problem.
