While playing with document routing, I realized that when reminders are added to binder items, they will show up when you view alerts …but the only way to clear the alert is by deleting the reminder date. This isn't ideal - I'd like to see a field added where the user can mark as complete or closed.

I think this is a great idea, but not only binder items but all items, maybe a check box to clear the items that no longer need attention.
